As a reminder – GenCant is a fully volunteer effort as a free “virtual” event for gamers around the world.
We’re rapidly approaching Gen Con 2016… which means we’re rapidly approaching #GenCant2016! This year, we’re trying to kick up the UnConvention a notch or two – starting with T-shirts! That’s right, we’re partnering with Analog Gamer to produce an official #GenCant T-Shirt this year.
The winner of this year’s design contest will have their design featured as the Official GenCant 2016 Badge and it will be printed as one of the official GenCant 2016 T-shirts! If you need some inspiration, here are the 2015 entries and winner.
THE RULES
- All submissions due by 11pm (Pacific) June 5, 2016.
- Submissions should be emailed as an attachment to design@gencant.com.
- GenCant is a family-friendly event. Please design accordingly.
- Please ensure you have the rights to use any imagery, fonts, and iconography you use on the design.
- The Selection Committee’s decision is final and based purely on collective subjective preference.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
- Typical badge size is 3″x4″ (900×1200 pixels in 300dpi). This isn’t required, but this way the official badge will slip easily into someone’s badge lanyard they may have from other events.
- Because the design will be printed on a T-shirt, use no more than 4 colors for the design.
- Designs can be created on the computer or hand drawn but ability to print on a T-shirt will be a factor in the selection. (Hand drawn designs will be assessed for ease of digital tracing.)
- Please save files as a TIFF or PNG in a high resolution. Vector files are preferred.

The winner will get a free shirt featuring their design as well as a lovely GenCant prize package.
Well I’ll volunteer the badge generator I had last year at http://gencant.brainclouds.net/ … which has already been updated with the 2016 cycle but, admittedly, is using my same designs from last year (except for last year’s winner, which I removed).
If I can help in any way, do let me know.
Would you be willing to make “blank” badges available? It would be nice to be able to print & cut some out on label sheets so event attendees can just write in their names with a marker…

If someone wants to donate artwork or designs what is the issue? I don’t get what the concern would be, but it’s your show 🙂

The good news is we will have a shirt (printed by Analog Gamer) but we will not have a contest for the design.
Within the greater design community there is concern about “design contests” being used to get “free work.” I believe GenCant is different because it is geared towards amateurs and everything is done on a volunteer basis – it’s really about community. But I did not want GenCant trashed on social media as something taking advantage of artists, so decided it was best to remove the contentious element. Stay tuned for details about the GenCant T-shirt. And thank you for your support.
Meh. People need to lighten up – this whole thing is a volunteer effort, so I don’t understand why people are up in arms about requesting volunteer design work along with all the other efforts that go into it. As Carrie said, if you’re worried about “working for free” then simply don’t participate – you don’t need to be a knight in shining armor riding in to defend the virtue of those who might actually *enjoy* participating in the contest.
That just seems silly….either volunteer your work, or don’t if you don’t want to. I’d be honored to have a design chosen. Sorry you had to deal with that, especially after all of the work you guys put into this!
