If it is one thing this year’s game design contest proved – Roll and Write games and Polyhedral dice were make magic together. With over 50 entries into the contest, it was a blast seeing the huge variety in game theme/setting and in how the game used the polyhedral dice. From food to rockets to ancient worlds and beyond, this year’s entries were entertaining, thoughtful, and fun.

This year’s winning design did a great job of using the polyhedral dice, had an approachable theme, and demonstrated rewarding play experience over repeated plays. Without further ado… I’m pleased to announce Polyhedral Park Planner by Justin Schroeder of Cardboard Crucible as our #GenCant2019 game.

polyhedral park planner

The biggest board gaming convention in the world is coming to your city, and local leaders want to develop a new city park to celebrate the event. They have solicited designs from the most prestigious firms in town to see who can plan the best park according to the demands of the local population. You, as a representative of one of these firms, must manage the limited budget of city hall and the restrictions of the proposed park site as you decide where to plant trees, lay paths, dig lakes, and build benches. The park planner that pleases the most people will win the bid and be honored at the opening ceremony of the convention.

You can download and print your own copy of this wonderful game that includes variable scoring and 100 player sheets to choose from on the PNP Arcade page.

By no means was this an easy choice. And I’m pleased to share that we have two Honorable Mention games as well. These games brought unique mechanisms, deep game play, and are both polished games that delightfully leverage the powers of polyhedral dice. Thank you to both designers for agreeing to share these designs with GenCanters as well.

Racing Stars by Robin Gibson

Queen Destructa has issued a challenge: One kart race against her own team of champions, winner decides the fate of the world. When our heroes arrive, the track is swarming with monsters and Destructa’s racers are flying overhead. As they start their engines and transformation sequences, they remain undaunted, because this is just a normal Saturday for the Racing Stars.

Egyptia by Steven Aramini

As one of Egypt’s most respected builders, you have been selected by the Pharaoh to expand the land. Each builder is given their own plateau to develop. Producing resources will be critcal to your success, but do not be too tempted by your ambiton, lest you should unleash a plague upon your growing city. Manage your resources and plan your city wisely to become the best builder in all of Egypt and earn a coveted place beside the Pharaoh!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE DESIGNERS WHO ENTERED. It takes hard work and bravery to enter a game into a design contest. We deeply appreciate your efforts.

And thank you the team at Button Shy and PNP Arcade for co-sponsoring the contest.

We hope everyone out there has fun with their new #RollAndWrite games!
